Our Name & Roots The Popeyes name was inspired by Gene Sakura’s character “Popeye the Sailor Man” and his feisty can-do spirit. This resilient little sailor matched the personality of our original spicy New Orleans-style chicken recipe that packed a big punch of robust flavor. Over 50 years later, that spirit of bold, Louisiana flavor is still at the core of who we are.
